Morphine Industries' product line consists of bars, stems, seatpost clamps, bar ends, as well as, a line of softgoods and stickers. "We plan on...
What the fork! - 20 Jun 08
Article courtesy of bmxbasics.org. The more things change... you know the rest. Once upon a time, racers bought their frames and forks separately. This was because there were very few manufacturers of truly durable forks. Come to think of it, there were very few manufacturers of durable frames either, but for some reason they tended to be different manufacturers from the durable-fork ones, and so one would often see Bottema forks on a DG, or SE Landing Gears on a Webco, or some other such odd combination. Eventually, everybody figured out how to make a semi-decent unicrown fork, and from the early Eighties until the late Nineties, frames and forks were sold together. Later on in those late Nineties, the clever people who run Dan's Competition came up with the idea of making you pay...
When Frames Fail - 9 Jun 08
Article courtesy of bmxbasics.org. As Reader's Digest is fond of saying, "It Pays To Enrich Your WORD POWER!" Here's the word for today: frisson. What's it mean? Nothing in English, but in French it means "shudder", more specifically the shudder that comes with a sudden realization or discovery. Here's an example. A couple years ago, I had the valves on my old Kawasaki Ninja adjusted. "You'll have a lot more power now that it's adjusted properly," my mechanic told me, so I headed directly for my local freeway and held the throttle open up to sixth gear. He was right---it had a LOT more power. I wanted to look at my speedometer so I could brag to my buddies about terminal velocity, et cetera, but I didn't quite have the guts to take my attention away from the road. After about two...

Supercross signs Mike Moeller - 30 Apr 08
IN WHAT IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE WEIRDEST AND QUICKEST DOUBLE A PRO SWITCHES SINCE THE REDLINE/HARO GRIGGS/KING TEAM SWITCH OF THE EARLY 90\'S IT SEEMS THAT SUPERCROSS AND CRUPI ARE DOING A LITTLE PRO SWAPPING. After just over 1 month on the Supercross Factory team Tyler Brown left for the Green of Team Crupi leaving an opening on the Supercross Factory Roster. Not wanting to fill the vacancy with just any AA Pro as we want a rider that has loyalty to the program and is as nice to the kids and fans as the rest of the Supercross Pro's are we decided to leave the spot open for a bit. That was until we received a call from one of the nicest and most loyal AA Pro's on the circuit. Mikey Moeller. Seems that he had decided to leave Crupi after being with them for 9 of his last 11 years...

Welcome Downtown Tyler Brown - 2 Apr 08
Supercross BMX adds Olympic Hopeful Mens Elite to the Factory Team... Welcome to the team Downtown Tyler Brown! Two weekends ago at the UCI Round 9 and 10 at the NBL Gator Nationals the BMX world got to see Tyler Brown take his first laps as a Supercross BMX Factory Team member. After privateering on a Supercross EVO iS at the start of the season it seemed like it was only going to be a matter of time before Tyler joined the Supercross BMX family. " After hanging out in the Supercross pits at the Goodyear Nationals and UCI race where Tyler took his first UCI Podium and then after hanging out with Sammy in Madrid where Tyler made his first UCI SX main we knew Tyler was a perfect fit for the team". Said Supercross BMX owner Bill Ryan. Tyler and Supercross BMX just seem to...

Hyper Bicycles is proud to announce that they have signed a multi-year sponsorship agreement with "dR" Donny Robinson. Having ridden for Hyper in the past, this partnership, for Donny, has roots that date back to the early 90's. When asked how he felt about returning to the Hyper team after so many years Donny said "I feel honored to represent Hyper in the most important year for BMX racing thus far and really, I've been a part of the Hyper family since '94, this is just a big coming home party for me." Hyper Bicycles...
Queenslanders eye Olympics - 14 Mar 08
Queensland duo lay claim to an Olympic berth. Two Queenslanders have stamped their claim on a spot in Australia's first ever BMX team to compete at this year's Beijing Olympics. Krystal Cranfield originally from Gladstone rode strongly to win the tenth round of the UCI Oceania Series in Penrith today. Fellow Queenslander, Jared Graves from Toowoomba repeated his win yesterday to finish in front of New Zealand's Marc Willers. Krystal out front in Toowoomba. Photo: Mark Argent The women's race saw a challenge between Cranfield and yesterday's winner, Nicole Callisto in the third of their three races. With National Champion, Tanya Bailey looking for some space it was Callisto who went over the final berm and was lucky not to sustain injury on her recent knee reconstruction. Tied up...

Willers second in BMX World SuperCross - 10 Feb 08
New Zealand BMX rider Marc Willers returns home for this weekend's Olympic qualifier in buoyant mood after finishing second in the opening round of the UCI SuperCross in Madrid, Spain today. The Cambridge rider continued his outstanding recent form after winning the final round of the SuperCross in France in December and winning the last two rounds of the Oceania Olympic qualifying events in Australia. Willers was edged into second place by four time world champion Arturs Matisons (Latvia) in the final in an outstanding performance from the BikeNZ rider. The kiwi struggled to find his form in practice yesterday but rode brilliantly today, winning his semifinal and holding his form in the final, finishing only 7/10ths of a second behind the winner. Bike NZ Media - 19 January 2008 WALKER, WILLERS DOMINATE BMX UCI ROUND IN MELBOURNE New Zealand BMX riders Sarah Walker (Kawerau) and Marc Willers (Cambridge) have won round six of the BMX UCI Oceania Ranking Series in Melbourne today. The BikeNZ pair further extended their respective leads in the championship series and with top performances in the upcoming two rounds Albany next month, they should virtually wrap-up qualifying sports for New Zealand for the Beijing Olympics. Walker won all three of her championship heats in emphatic fashion, while Willers came from the unlikely No 7 gate in the men's grand final for victory. Walker won the opening heat from a good gate despite taking a poor line into a key corner, won the second emphatically and needing only to finish in the...
Factory Hyper sign Adam Shields - 19 Jan 08
Adam Shield's (Mackay, Queensland) has been offered a ride with the Hyper Factory Team for 2008. Hyper Brand Manager Jud Ciancio first contacted me a few weeks ago to ask if Adam would be interested in joining the US based team and after discussing the offer with Adam I am pleased to be able to announce that he has gladly accepted. Adam is the current W8 & W4 in the 14 Boys & 13-14 Cruiser classes respectively. In 2007 Adam also took out the Champbikx (national series) title, as well as the QLD State, & Australian National Championship titles. Adam is currently leading in the 2008 Champbikx series. This truly is a wonderful opportunity for Adam & a possible "launching point" for a career racing BMX in the USA. Adam will remain on the Sirius Bicycles' Team Hyper roster also but...

BMX in Youth Olympic Games 2010 - 30 Oct 07
On July 5th 2007 the IOC created the Youth Olympic Games. The Sports program of these Games acknowledges 26 sport disciplines, among which is Cycling. In the Cycling discipline only BMX and Mountain Biking are listed. This is what the IOC President Jacques Rogge had to say about the new IOC creation. "By creating the Youth Olympic Games the IOC played its role as a catalyst for the sports movement. It showed that its commitment to the youth of today and tomorrow is about action, not just words, by offering them an event of their own in the spirit of the Olympic Games. Having helped to bring about the new event, I wish to show you how the Youth Olympic Games can inspire young people around the world to take up sport. We all know that sport today plays an even greater...

Team Custom Plates - 23 Oct 07
Sirius Bicycles' team riders will be sporting custom made plates very soon. The plates have been designed for the team in the US by HRP Designs & will be available in time for the riders to use at the upcoming Nerang Nationals. HRP Designs make a lot of the plates for the factory teams in the US, as well as for major events like ABA / NBL Nationals races, Grands etc. The design of these plates tells a little of the story behind Sirius Bicycles - New Zealand's national colours are incorporated into the border of the plate to signify the past. A map of Australia, which cleverly provides the background, represents the present. And the individual rider's numbers recognises the future. And finally our current race sponsor's logos are also displayed down the right edge of the plate....

Team Formula News - 9 Oct 07
The 2007 Queensland State Titles was the first major meeting for the newly formed Team Formula - Australia & all riders performed well. The Harbour City track was fast & the racing fierce, and although two of the newest members of the team had not long been on their Formula bikes all riders were equally up to the task. Brendan Abel (4th 15 Boys / 1st 15-16 Cruiser) was in a word... dominant! He cruised his way through qualifying with an awesome display of horsepower & if not for a little bad luck in his final may well have doubled for the weekend. Brock Smith (5th 10 Boys) also dominated his qualifying motos, quarter & semi final races but like Brendan also had some difficulty in his final. However when you consider Brock had only been on his 2008 Formula Nucleus for a week prior...

Team News - 19 Aug 07
It's been a real whirlwind these past few months within the Sirius Bicycles camp with riders out with injury, the restructuring of teams, & new riders coming on board... and all this with state championships looming. Firstly an injury update. In spite of a brave attempt to return to racing at the South QLD Titles, Team Supercross rider Chelsea King is still out with an elbow injury. It will be the New Year before the former Aussie No. 1 can return to racing, assuming she's able to return at all - there's a slim chance she may not recover from her injury which would be a tragedy given her obvious potential. Until that time however we'll keep our fingers crossed that she heals & can make a return to her winning ways. Team Hyper rider Craig Holmes has had a horror run of injuries of...

South Queensland Championships - 13 Jul 07
Sirius Bicycles team riders were in action this past weekend at the South Queensland Championships, hosted by the Redlands club. Say cheese! Although the track is not very technical, by today's standards, it was very well groomed & provided for a very fast track to race on. And the weather did its part so all in all it was a great weekend of racing. This was a great opportunity for some much needed exposure for the team, as a great many of the riders are from the (QLD) southern zone in particular. And now that all of the team riders are dressed in their new race wear, they looked as sharp as their on-track performances over the weekend. Many of Sirius Bicycles' brands were also key performers & in particular it's interesting to note the breakdown of the Pro Men's results in terms...

Clash of National Champions NZ Vs Aust. UCI BMX Pacific-Oceania Ranking Series. Lake Macquarie, Australia - June 9, 2007 Race officials at this weekend's UCI BMX race were determined to conduct racing in Newcastle despite the region being declared a disaster zone. Riders from Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong braved fallen trees, fallen power lines and floodwaters to ride the final UCI Oceania-Pacific Round. It's a UCI event, we can't cancel it although we could have postponed it," said Chief Commissaire, Andy Mellish. "The track held up really well considering the amount of rain that had fallen. All we needed was a generator for the start gate." New Zealand's Sarah Walker proved her number one world ranking was justified by winning all three elite women's races. In the final...

Upgrades to the Centenary Plains BMX track at Browns Plains (Queensland) are now complete. The track has been a work in progress for almost 6 months now, hindered in large part by the scarcity of clean fill, however with just the race (top) surface to be put down, the track is finally completed & is big, fast, technical, & damn good fun to ride! A small table top jump has been added to the last straight to increase the challenge by giving it a more "rhythmic" feel & to reduce the amount of pedaling required. The new double on the first straight has also been lengthened slightly, & behind the last turn has been built up to accommodate race officials and/or spectators. NB: these new changes are not included in the photos. View of start hill from last straight. View of 1st &...

Steel race forks making a comeback - 4 Mar 07
Is it just me or have you also noticed that there has been a huge shift from carbon/alloy race forks back to steel (chromoly) race forks? If you look at the photos from the recent Boulder City Nationals in Nevada you'll notice that many of the senior/pro riders are now running chromoly forks. I think there are several reasons for this - first & foremost would be safety. As the tracks (jumps) continue to get bigger safety is becoming of greater concern to the riders & steel offers greater peace of mind. Because of its higher tensile strength & when placed under extreme stress and/or force, steel will bend but won't snap or sheer off as other materials are more inclined to do. BMXers are by their very nature extremely weight conscious & in years past nothing could compare to the...

New team co-sponsorship program - 25 Jan 07
Sirius Bicycles is pleased to introduce a new co-sponsorship program intended to support BMX racing teams Downunder. I’ve long held the belief that a team environment is one of nurturing & is conducive to teaching young people values that they’ll ultimately carry into adulthood. Young people benefit from being a part of a team as in addition to their immediate family, a team can provide a young athlete with a large support group of like-minded individuals all working towards a common goal sharing the same/similar experiences along the way. Of course not everyone gets to race as part of a team. If however by offering assistance to race teams in the form of product support, Sirius Bicycles can encourage more people to either start up a BMX race team, or to join one,...

Ceilidh calls it a day - 13 Jan 07
Ceilidh calls it a day It is with remorse that I announce the retirement of Ceilidh O’Sullivan from the sport of BMX racing & Team Staats Australia. Ceilidh has a hearing disability & wears a hearing aid to assist her. However recently her hearing has deteriorated & she faced loosing her hearing, speech, & subsequently her ability to communicate verbally unless she underwent a career ending medical procedure. On the bright side this procedure will not only restore her hearing & improve her speech, but also provide her with an opportunity to pursue new goals! The decision weighed heavy on Ceilidh’s mind, as she had a very promising racing career ahead of her & Olympic aspirations also. But there is no doubt that she has made the right decision even if she will be missed. Sirius Bicycles...

Afro Bob Interview - 20 Dec 06
Afro Bob Interview A few years ago Staats Bicycles sent Robert de Wilde to New Zealand on a promotional junket & to assist me in raising awareness of the Staats brand. He was back again the following year to holiday & conduct some coaching clinics. Since that time I have come to know Robert pretty well & in my opinion he is the most professional BMX racer I have met. He is also completely nuts & when I first thought up the idea of interviewing riders for this website, Afro Bob was my obvious first choice. I won't list all of Robert's titles here suffice to say he has accomplished just about everything anyone could on a BMX bike!... Click here [1] to read this interview. Formula Bicycles Update - 18 Dec 06
Formula Bicycles Update The following is the body of an email I received from Will Rells officially confirming the sale of Formula Bicycles. In my view this is welcome news & I look forward to moving ahead with the Formula brand in 2007... "Hey guys just wanted to let everyone know that we have gone through some overwhelming changes here at Formula over the past couple of weeks. Formula has in fact been sold to a company called Action Sports Distributors, and the deal was finalised last week. I will still be in charge of the Formula brand, but ASD has added some much needed infrastructure to help with keeping Formula going in the right direction. Please forgive us as the transition process is very difficult along with our already overloaded work schedule. The net result to all of you is that Formula will...

Team Staats AUS News - 11 Dec 06
Team Staats will be very busy in the New Year. I can now confirm that all of the eight Team Staats (AUS) riders will be at the Nerang Nationals next month racing for the very first time as a team. And as it turns out Alexandra Williams, Kane Barry, & Wyatt Clinch, - all Kiwi Staats team riders, will also be making the trip across to the Gold Coast to join them. I’m certain of one thing… & that is that Staats Bicycles will be well represented at the first major race meeting of the New Year. The Nerang Nationals is one of the larger races on the Australian calendar & this time around the race will be even bigger as it is not only a UCI ranking round but BMXA Champbikx & Probikx rounds also. 2007 is the first season of Probikx & this series promises to be a highly...

Which is best... alloy or chromoly? - 31 Aug 06
I'm often asked for my opinion on what frame material is best, alloy or chromoly. And while I think it's a matter of personal choice here is my opinion on the matter. Simply put alloy has always been preferred because of the weight saving & “stiffness” of the frame. A stiffer frame is a more responsive ride, thus the rider benefits from quicker gates, better cornering, etc. In recent years many of the US manufacturers moved their production off-shore to improve their turnaround times & to reduce costs, thereby improving their bottom line. And although in most cases the design of these frames remained the same some of the frames were made from an inferior alloy and/or suffered from poor workmanship, resulting in the frames cracking or snapping outright. Recently...

Frodo World Champion [1]New Zealand enjoyed a sensational start to the fifth day of the UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships in Rotorua claiming gold and silver in the junior men's downhill. Hamilton's Cameron Cole clocked an impressive 3m28.29s after hurtling himself down the steep slopes of Mt Ngongotaha to win New Zealand's first ever world championship gold medal in men's downhill. Wanganui's Sam Blenkinsop clawed back a 2.5 second deficit after coming off his bike to claim silver while French rider Antoine Badoaurd came home third in 3m29.84s. Blenkinsop was largely touted as New Zealand's best chance of a medal earlier in the week after being ranked first following Thursday's downhill seeding run.
